Practical English Usage
Talking And Writing, Or Maybe Even Thinking?
I’m in my home office sitting at my desk. My office is a small room, cozy and warm with lots of natural light. Beneath my feet lie grey wooden floors that feel good under my feet. It smells of fresh coffee and heat from the electric radiator. The walls are covered in pale lilac and forest green. To add to the atmosphere, I've included Michelangelo’s Studies for the Libyan Sibyl. Looking out the window, we find a landscape of snow and a world at rest. A few notebooks are scattered across the desk, and a big plant leans toward the light.
My two children are in school, and I’m home alone.
Our home is a two-story wooden house. The interior is warm and filled with natural wood furnishings, giving the space a cozy and rustic atmosphere.
Accompanied by the sounds of Randy Newman, I’m focused on my writing, what a wonderful way to spend the day.
Practical English usage focuses on how English is used in real situations, not just in textbooks. For me, practical English usage isn’t about sounding perfect or fancy; it’s about finding the words that actually work in the moment. Little by little, I’m building up a style that feels genuine. Not textbook-English. Not overly formal. Just clear, simple, and honest communication; the kind I can use anywhere, whether I’m describing my house, telling a story, or asking for the right word.
I’m not out here writing Shakespearean sonnets. I’m just trying to describe my house without sounding like I’m auditioning for a real‑estate commercial. But that’s kind of the point. Practical English usage is about grabbing the words you need right when you need them, like a verbal toolbox. And trust me, most days I’m working with a hammer, two screws, and a piece of string.
Take it from a Norwegian whose English is a second language: keep it simple. Communicate clearly and naturally, and be yourself through your writing.
